The first in Amitav Ghosh’s new trilogy of novels, Sea of Poppies is a stunningly vibrant and intensely human work that confirms his reputation as a master storyteller. At the heart of this epic saga is a vast ship, the Ibis. Its destiny is a tumultuous voyage across the Indian Ocean to the Mauritius Islands. As to the people on board, they are a motley array of sailors and stowaways, coolies and convicts. In a time of colonial upheaval in the mid nineteenth century, fate has thrown together a truly diverse cast of Indians and Westerners, from a bankrupt Raja to a widowed village-woman, from a mulatto American freedman to a free-spirited European orphan. As they sail down the Hooghly and into the sea, their old family ties are washed away, and they view themselves as jahaj-bhais, or ship-brothers, who will build whole new lives for themselves in the remote islands where they are being taken. It is the beginning of an unlikely dynasty.

Recently, I read an interesting book named Sea of Poppies written by Amitav Ghosh, an eminent story teller in the world of English literature. This is the best story book among his works. I liked it very much. This is a small booklet but looks like a great novel. The story is about a vast ship, the Ibis, which started its voyage across the Indian oceans to Mauritius Islands. It was so amazing thing for me that in this ship convicts were also sailing along with sailors, stowaways and coolies. I felt so sad when I read that the fate of the sailors who were sailing in this ship was so bad. Due to the heavy unexpected tides all these sailors reached a remote unknown island. I read this novel with anxiety without stopping in the middle. This is a wonderful work and definitely the reader enjoys while reading this novel.

Have read the excerpts that came as a small booklet with Outlook a few days back. Looks like a great novel. Have put through an order and am waiting to get my hands onto it. I think it'll be as engrossing as 'Shantaram' - while I was reading it, I was off TV the whole duration.
