Jeans can be defined as any
trousers or pants made from the denim fabric that came from Nimes in France. Much to your delight and knowledge, the story behind these Jeans is very interesting and happens to go way back in the 1600's.
17th Century – The denim fabric was first made in Chieri, a small town near Italy, when it was made from a mixture of other material. These were first designed for the navy forces of Genoa, an independent republic and a naval power then, who required multi purpose pants that could be easily fit into dry or wet and comfortably pulled up for smooth working on the decks of the ship and could be easily bleached with the sea water, overall becoming a complete utility.
Many believe that the name 'Jeans' comes from
bleu de Gênes, that means,
blue of Genoa.
18th Century – This was the time when
jeans were made completely by cotton as the cotton plantation had flourished immensely, and were worn by the workers as they could last longer instead of their previous old pants that would easily get torn out. Cotton being a white fabric could not give jeans the blue colour, for which indigo, a dye extracted from the plants of India & America was used on the fabric.
19th Century – During this period, the life cycle of jeans underwent a tremendous transition. Mentioned below are the phases that give you a valuable insight into its evolution :
- In 1848, Gold was found first in California, that paved the way for the famous Gold Rush, thereby triggering the need for a stronger clothing, that would not wear out easily. That was when Leob Strauss, 24, of German Jewish ethnicity who later changed his name to Levi, was supplying jeans to the Californian miners under his name “Levi's” and was running a wholesale business in San Fransisco.
- In 1853, Jacob Davis, a regular customer at Levi Strauss & Co., struck an idea of fixing up copper buttons to make the trouser last long, unlike the previous ones that used to get ripped off or torn out within a short span, but he unfortunately couldn't get his idea patented due to the huge amount required.
- In 1872, Davis proposed to Levi Strauss about the business they could get into applying his copper rivets ideology creatively, to which he agreed and got the idea patented.
- In 1873, the first of such copper buttoned or riveted jeans were made and sold.
- In 1886, the Levi's jeans carried a leather label on the back that pictured a pair of jeans being pulled away by two horses, signifying the strength and power of the Levi's Jeans.
- In 1891, the patent for Levi's became public and many companies started using the idea.

In the 1970's, the terms and conditions of the world trade had relaxed down to an extent and now jeans could finally flow out of the West America towards the South. Here, since the labour was reasonably cheap,e jeans also became inexpensive.
